Celebrating World Environment Day

World Environment Day is held annually to encourage worldwide awareness and action to protect the environment.

This year’s theme, Only One Earth, is extremely important (and timely). Let’s explore in more depth what the day is about, and the business practices Meluka Australia has implemented to support environmental sustainability.

The most important day on the calendar

For almost half a century, World Environment Day has been used as a platform to raise awareness for a variety of environmental issues – marine pollution, overpopulation, sustainable consumption and even wildlife crime.

The impact of climate change is on the forefront of environmental concerns globally, so it comes as no surprise that this year’s World Environment Day theme is focused on encouraging people all around the world to commit to transformative actions.

This year’s Only One Earth theme highlights “the need to live sustainably in harmony with nature by bringing transformative changes – through policies and our choices – towards cleaner, greener lifestyles”.

No matter where you are around the world, you can start making a difference to our planet.

Meluka Australia’s sustainable farming practices

At Meluka Australia, this message resonates with us as sustainability is at the forefront of our operations.

We’re committed to protecting the unique ecosystem and ancient mother trees that thrive on our farms, living sustainably and in harmony with nature.

First and foremost, by adopting certified organic farming practices, we are committed to choosing natural, regenerative farming solutions, making the conscious choice to avoid the use of man-made chemicals.

Our commitment to organic farming has lead to the alignment of all our operations to the nationally and internationally recognised Australian Certified Organic standard and USDA organic standard. This acts as a stamp of integrity and provides reassurance that we meet rigorous certification standards, prohibiting the use of synthetic chemicals, including pesticides, fungicides and herbicides that can be used in non-organic agricultural farming.

We embrace the lost art of ‘wild crafting’, which is practised in our old-growth forest, where we hand-harvest tea tree leaves as this helps to stimulate the natural biological defence system of the area. This allows us to craft our tea-tree products while leaving the forest unspoilt.

When it comes to collecting our honey, we prioritise the wellbeing of our bees. We pride ourselves on our sustainable beekeeping practices which ensure our bees are well looked after. This in turn ensures they produce honey that is superior in both taste and quality.

To maintain our exacting environmental standards, we sought out certification for our sustainable farming practices. We’re proud to say our farm is Australian Certified Organic (ACO), which means it’s free from the use of man-made chemicals. Our tea tree products and some of our raw honey range are ACO as well as USDA-certified.

The power of upcycling

We are big proponents of the upcycling movement.

Our packaging material, from our parcel boxes to jars, are easy to upcycle and we regularly share a range of fun DIY upcycling projects on our socials to give a new life to our product containers after you’ve finished using them.

One of our recent favourites is upcycling our delicious Raw Honey jars to prepare and store breakfast dishes, such as yogurt and granola parfaits. Or, if you’re a fan of our Raw Honey Probiotic Concentrate, you can wash and reuse the bottles to create a bee hotel!

We also have a recipe hub filled with a selection of recipes that encourage the use of fresh, local and seasonal ingredients to minimise food waste. It includes recipes for drinks, snacks, meals and more.

Whether it’s reducing the amount of waste you produce, or upcycling our Meluka bottles and containers, even the smallest change can make a big difference to the planet. After all, there’s Only One Earth.

Explore the wide range of Meluka products via our online store, be inspired by our blog, and find tasty recipes for ongoing health and wellness.
